About Rath and the Islands
Rath and The Islands Parish is the Catholic Community of Baltimore, Sherkin Island and Cape Clear Island and surrounding areas.
The parish is bounded by the Ilen River to the North, Lough Hyne to the South, Oldcourt to the East and Baltimore village to the West including Sherkin Island and Oileán Chléire.
The Parish is served by three Churches- Sacred Heart Church, Rath (1831), St Mona’s Church, Sherkin Island (1831) and Séipéal Naomh Ciarán, Oileán Chléire (1839)
The Sacred Heart Church is located in the townland of Rath which is 2 miles from the village of Baltimore on the main road to Skibbereen. The Church was built in 1831 and its most recent renovations were completed in 2010.
